How to care for your Sullman Luxatome ®

Material of construction: -

The Sullman Luxatome ® is made in the U.K from high quality stainless steel

Methods of Sterilisation: -

The Sullman Luxatome ® can be sterilised by Autoclave (132 degrees Celsius for 20 minutes), or by Dry Heat (180 degrees Celsius for 120 minutes).

It is essential not to expose the instrument to temperatures in excess of 180 degrees Celsius and not to use corrosive or bleaching materials.

Used instruments should be considered as contaminated and appropriate handling precautions should be taken during strilisation. Gloves, eye protection and a mask should be warn. Other measures may be required if there are specific infection or cross-contamination risks from the patient.

Instruments should be evenly spaced and not overcrowded to allow good steam penetration during sterilisation.

To prevent formation of water stains on the instruments, open the door a crack between the autoclave cycle and the drying cycle. Opening the door fully causes condensation to form on the instruments.

The autoclave should bear the CE markand the manufacturer's instructions must be followed. In particular, care must be taken not to exceed the maximum recommended load for the autoclave.

Packaging for sterilisation: -

If using a vacuum autoclave the instruments must be packed in dedicated instrument trays or pouches validated for sterilisation.

If using a non-vacuum autoclave the instruments must not be packed or wrapped but placed on open trays to obviate the need for unnecessary handling.

NOTE: National legislation may require that instruments are wrapped in pouches for processing in either type of autoclave.

Inspection: -

Inspect the instruments with the aid of magnification if necessary and discard any damaged or corroded instruments.

Storage: -

The instruments should be stored in the sterilisation container (instrument tray or pouch) until required. Containers or pouches must be dry before opening to avoid recontamination of the contents with water. Storage should be in dry, clean conditions and at an ambient temperature.

Sharpening: -

The Sullman Luxatome ® is sharpened in the same way as traditional styles of other Luxating instruments. To sharpen the Sullman Luxatome ®, hold the luxatome ® in one hand and the sharpening stone in the other hand. The concave surface of the luxatome ® tip only should be placed on the stone and stroke the tip away from the hand holding the sharpening stone. Lift and repeat until the tip is sharp.

It is important to avoid the bend during the sharpening process so as not to weaken the luxating instrument. Sharpening, incorrect use or other undue stress that involves the structure of the bend will weaken the instrument and may cause damage or breakage.

Caution:When sharpening the tool, take care not to form a step between luxating component and the bend as this would weaken the instrument. Sharpening should only involve the luxating tip.
